Sweet and Protected: Design and product protection as a symbiosis for sustainable honey packaging
The honey packaging, created by KURZ Design Management, takes the viewer on a journey into the beehive, right into the interior of the honeycomb, where the shiny golden honey is hidden. The printed bees on the packaging have a very special security function. The design combines digital finishing and printing technology with sophisticated security features and conscious conservation of resources.
Design concept and implementation
The honey packaging concept was intended to enable the cooperation partners LEONHARD KURZ, SCRIBOS,and HP to demonstrate their skills and create packaging with real added value. Packaging and content go hand in hand and embody sustainability awareness at various levels. As a natural, unprocessed product, honey spreads the message of protecting the environment and our products. The packaging is compact and designed with minimal use of materials. Notably, each packaging is unique and comes with the ValiGate® product protection feature, which makes an original product clearly distinguishable from a counterfeit, so that you can unequivocally rely on the quality of the bottled contents
- KURZ digital finishing: Both smooth and rough paper surfaces can be finished digitally. Filigree details are easy to achieve, as are small quantities. The fine pollen on the bee's legs stands out haptically, and various tactile effects are incorporated all over the packaging: Fine dots, delicate lines, and grids, with and without finishes.
- Digital finishing machines: The label was finished with the DM-JETLINER 2D, which can be used to create flat, overprintable metallizations with high brilliance. The DM-MAXLINER 3D was used to refine the packaging, which can also be used to achieve a wide range of haptic effects.
- SCRIBOS product protection: There is a copy-protected SCRIBOS ValiGate® QR code on the honey label. This QR code can be printed with any HP Indigo printer. Original products can be distinguished from counterfeits with a simple scan using a smartphone, without having to download an app. By scanning the QR code, consumers get product information such as ingredients, recyclability, and sustainability. In addition, they can take part in various customer loyalty programs that are displayed to them after the scan, for example to collect bonus points, win prizes, and be redirected to product videos, social media channels, and online shops.
ValiGate® not only makes it possible to detect counterfeits using AI analysis tools, but also to trace a product from the manufacturer to the end customer. In addition, brand owners can obtain valuable information from the consumer scans. The honey packaging comes with two-factor authentication: In the first step, the ValiGate® counterfeit protection is checked by means of a smartphone scan. In a second step, the consumer can compare whether the displayed position of the bee on the smartphone matches the position on their packaging. The position and orientation of the 2-factor bee are unique identifying features that differ on each package.
Honey as a symbol of environmental awareness
The bottled honey was produced in Germany. More than 120,000 bees have worked hard to fill the honeycombs in their hives with sweet, natural honey.
This project symbolically shows how serious KURZ is about resource conservation and environmental pollution control. After all, bees not only produce delicious honey but are also essential for the environment. That’s why KURZ also provides a habitat for five bee colonies on a large meadow on its company premises in Fürth. The hives belong to a local beekeeper, with whom KURZ has been cooperating since 2022 to provide employees with insights into honey production.
